Ayurveda Fall Guide

🍁The FALL brings with it a predominance of air element and ‘prana’, the vital breath is abundant in the atmosphere. Fall is dry, rough, windy, erratic, cool, subtle, and clear. These are all qualities shared by vata dosha, hence autumn is considered a vata season. Temperatures, which, just a few weeks ago were raging with the intense heat of summer, are beginning to hint at the crispness of autumn🍁

◆ EFFECT OF SEASON ON BODY AND DOSHA ◆ We are at the junction between summer and fall. Our minds and bodies are accustomed to the weather and foods of summer. If we don't make changes in our diet and lifestyle to adjust to Vata (fall) season when it arrives, this will disturb the balance in the body. So care should be taken to balance both Vata and Pitta doshas, as both doshas have accumulated at this point. By ridding your body of excess Pitta and Vata dosha, you'll be starting the new season with a clean slate. The person’s strength remains medium and AGNI (catabolism) is strong.

◆ DIET REGIMEN ◆ Continue following the cooling summer Pitta pacifying diet during the first week. Gradually transition to a fall Vata pacifying diet and daily routine by the second week. Foods that has sweet and bitter taste are suggested like Wheat, Grams, Sugar, etc. Milk, butter, fully ripened sweet fruits like Melon, Grapes, Pears and Mangoes are good. Food should be taken only when feeling properly hungry. . ◆ LIFESTYLE ◆ Massage yourself daily with moisturizing herbal massage Oil. Bathing water should be hot. Perform Nasya karma (nasal administration of oil) to cleanse and lubricate the sinuses and calm the mind. Apple sandalwood paste. You need extra rest during this time of seasonal change to keep the doshas in balance. Do light yoga stretches and walk ½ hour daily. . ◆ AVOID ◆ Vata aggravating foods, such as light, cold, and dry foods. Exposure to strong and cold wind, habit of day sleep, etc., are mentioned to be avoided
